Remo stared into the scope of his trusted M14. “Shit,” he muttered. The bastard moved just before the 7.62x51mm slug hit him. Now he was in for a dogfight. He watched through his scope as the Ukrainian hitman rolled for cover behind a pillar a few feet away- leaving the detonation trigger out of his reach. Before the man could recover his senses, Remo fired off another two rounds from his M14 before abandoning it for his Heckler & Koch SOCOM issued Mk23 handgun. He knew, from this moment on, it would be a game of cat and mouse with the trigger as the cheese. The only question remaining was: which one would he be?
As he crouch-ran down the eastern slope, Remo was sure to keep one eye on his quarry. Every so often he would take a shot, duck behind a tree, wait for the return fire, then repeat the process until he was at the foothills of the ruins with no more tree to hide behind.
“Where will you go now, coward?” Taunted the Butcher. “You have run out of trees to hide behind.”
If it was one thing Remo hated, it was a wiseass hitman. They always ran their yap, never knowing when to shut the hell up. However, the one element Remo had over his opponent was the fact that while he was scanning the grounds for any unwelcome visitors, he also took the time to survey the site itself. Which meant, Remo knew where every column and slab of ruined stone was from one end of Knossos Palace to the other. And so, without hesitation, Remo fired off two rounds then ran to his left five-feet ducking behind a thick rectangular slab, just as a shot chipped off a piece of stone inches from his right foot.
He was close to the spot where Volkov left the trigger, but he knew the Ukraine was closer. Remo took a deep breath and fired several shots as he ran deeper into the center of the ruins, taking cover behind a lone red column and base. The Butcher returned fire, a round barely missing Remo’s shoulder as he stood behind the narrow column.
“You should give yourself up, American!” The Butcher shouted. “I have two more clips and the advantage. You cannot win. Throw down your arms and I will kill you with dignity.”
“Why should I believe you?” Remo asked, trying to buy some time. The simple fact of the matter was the bastard was right about having the advantage.
“Because I am an honorable man,” came his reply. “You throw down your weapon and I will give you a proper death. A soldier’s death.”
A soldier’s death was one shot in the back of the head at close range. Remo knew this and thought he might be able to win this scrum if he employed some unconventional strategy. This Boris Volkov may be telling the truth. Then again, he might shoot him dead the second he steps out from behind the column. There was only one way to find out.
